Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys
The Beach Boys' magnum opus. Not much can be said about this album that hasn't already been said. Yes, I believe Brian Wilson is a genius, even if that discourse was a part of his eventual mental breakdown, but how can you not proclaim something like that upon listening to this masterpiece? To take what could have been written off in history as nothing more than a boy band cashing in on the surf rock fad and create some of the most beautiful harmonies to grace pop music.
It's an amazing album, really beautiful, the instrumentation mixed with the harmonies all composed by Brian Wilson himself are truly astounding. The lyrics, which can be seen as juvenile and naive, are what really makes the album special. Instead of the Beach Boys trying to prove themselves as adults throught their lyrics, they take typical teenage experiences and give them a beautiful balladic treatment, something which is hardly done in the pop world. An essential album for any listener of any genre
Nebraska - Bruce Springsteen
Your average person probably knows Bruce Springsteen as nothing more than a heartland rocker who sings about how great small town living is and the enlightenment found in blue collar back breaking work. While this may be true for a handful of his more pop oriented songs, some of his most praised and revered work paints the American heartland with much more complexity, often with darker themes. Nebraska possesses this theme and outlook more than any album in Springsteen's discography.
Ram - Paul McCartney
Aja - Steely Dan
Remain in Light - Talking Heads
